OnTime 2007 performance is poor

    OnTime 2007 performance is poor

We use the OnTime 2007 web portal, and have found it to be extremely slow.  Does anyone have any documentation on what can be done to speed up performance?

One of the questions I have is that we have Features, Tasks, Incidents, Work logs all turned on, but we only use OnTime for defect tracking.  If I turn the other features off, would it improve performance at all.

At first I thought it might just be related to the server we run OnTime on, but then I signed up for a hosted trial account and noticed it also preformed rather slowly, although better than what we currently experience, so maybe there isn't anything that can be done.

From a QA perspective, if a bugbase is slow, it makes testing a very, very painful process, so we have to do something to speed up our bugbase.

Re: OnTime 2007 performance is poor

We do not have any additional information or documentation to speed up the performance in the OnTime 2007 Customer Portal web client. Can you tell me if the performance problem that you are seeing is also visible with using the OnTime windows or web clients by any chance? What type of operating system are you currently working with to host the SQL server as well as the OnTime 2007 web client? Are the minimum system requirements meet for the OnTime 2007 product?

The OnTime system requirements can be review under the following URL.

If you have any additional information on this issue, please be sure to let us know at your earliest convenience.

    Thank you,

Hello, and thanks for the reply.

    >Can you tell me if the performance problem that you are seeing is also visible with using the OnTime windows or web clients by any chance?

We are using the web client primarily because it is faster than the windows client in our environment (we all work remotely), and this was suggested in the past by Hamid.

    >What type of operating system are you currently working with to host the SQL server as well as the OnTime 2007 web client?

Both are on the same WIN 2K3 machine.

    >Are the minimum system requirements meet for the OnTime 2007 product?

Yeah, the specs are 2.0 GHZ AMD Opteron Processor, with 2GB of RAM.

We originally all used the windows app, but when it was suggested we use the web app all 10 of our developers switched to using the web app.  We also regularly (about once a month) archive all the closed bugs.

I just did a short test, to see how long it would take to perform some normal actions inside of OnTime in the web app:

    • Login - took 31 seconds for the login to occur
    • Edit a bug - 12 seconds for a bug to launch in edit mode
    • Add a new bug - 4 - 5 seconds

Re: OnTime 2007 performance is poor

Please make sure that the OnTime web client virtual directory in IIS is not using an application pool that is associated with an alternative virtual directory which uses .net 1.1 instead of 2.0. If you do have a set application pool for the OnTime web client, please be sure to assign an alternative one and restart IIS to see if this will make a difference.

As a test, would it be possible if you could relocate the OnTime web client to an alternative web server to see if the performance of the web client could be better by any chance? A 12 second delay to edit an individual item is unacceptable behavior in the OnTime 2007 web client.

    Thank you,

Re: OnTime 2007 performance is poor

    Hey Dragan,

    Thanks for the reply.

I just checked to make sure that the site uses .NET 2.

We actually have been able to speed up the performance a bit by running the 'Start Up Wizard' and removing the things we didn't use such as feature tracking and customer incident tracking.

Thanks for the suggestions, but I honestly didn't want to spend the time relocating to another web server.  Seems to be doing better now.

Re: OnTime 2007 performance is poor

That is correct. The OnTime 2007 Web client works with .Net Framework 2.0. Please make sure that the ASP.Net tab for the virtual directory of OnTime 2007 web is set to use the .net 2.0 version.

    Thank you,

Re: OnTime 2007 performance is poor

Why are you wondering ?? All normal commercial issue tracking systems always have special database requests processing caching system.

OnTime has no any caching. Page loading takes more that 50 secs!!

IMHO - OnTime is the worst choice ever (especially taking into consideration its price).
