In the purechat.config file I set the following:

but on the site, it still shows the icon for chat (with both balloons grey).

Isn't the setting I showed supposed to not show the icon?

What might be wrong?

Well, we can skip this. Although I reloaded the site and then restarted the browser, which usually will update this sort of thing, I later discovered that it worked after restarting the server.

This is correct...depending on the permissions you have where PureChat is installed, a change to the settings may get picked up automatically, but you may have to restart the server.
