    Windows Install

I was once very excited when I found and read about OnTime. I kept bugging my manager to take a look at it, along with several other options, so that we could evaluate and select a tool that meets our needs.

I have tried several times over the last few months, when time permitted, to install OnTime on my laptop, which is running WinXP. The requirements for installation included a SQL Server and .Net. I already had .Net installed so I moved on to the next requirement SQL Server.

I followed the OnTime install directions and downloaded SQLServer Express Edition. There were several version of Express Edition so I first choose the smaller distribution as I had no clue which version to use. I must mention at this point that I have never used SQL Server and I am not a Windows Developer. After installing SQL Server I tried to use OnTime to create a new database without success. I assumed I was not installing SQL Server correctly so I spent a lot of time trying to get up to speed on it but I never could get it working. I also tried uninstalling and using a different version of SQL Server Express Edition but that failed as well. I have no idea what I am doing wrong.

Do you have any kind of instructions available explaining how to install SQL Server so that I can get OnTime working? At this point I am ready to give up trying to evaluate OnTime as I have wasted more than enough time trying to install it.

    Re: Windows Install

I think the problem that you are experiencing has to do with a few SQL express configuration settings that you would need to configure before attempting to use the OnTime windows client. We have noticed that remote SQL connections must be enabled for the SQL Express instance in order for the OnTime application to properly connect to the SQL server. The link following link will take you to our OnTime FAQ section where this problem is mentioned. Please follow the necessary steps within the Microsoft knowledge based article on how to enable remote connections for SQL Express.

I will give it a try again. I am running the database on my laptop in addition to OnTime so I don't know why the remote connection setting would be an issue.

Try changing the SQL Server Name to "(local)\sqlexpress"

I have mine setup as above and don't have the Remote Connections Enabled for the Microsoft SQL Server 2005.

You can also try using the IP address or computer name followed by \SQLexpress. Users can also download the free edition of SQL Management Studio for SQL Express which will give your more ability to administer the SQL instance that you have setup.

    Re: Windows Install

I finally got it working after setting the SQL Server Name to "(local)\sqlexpress". Somehow I missed the very important (local) part of the name.

Now I can start using it for my current projects in order to evaluate and show my manager once I get some real data into it.

    Thanks!
