Gift [G] OnTime 2007 SDK - Outlook Task Sample
This thread exists for the discussion of the OnTime 2007 SDK Outlook Task Sample, which I recently wrote a blog post about.  Feel free to ask questions, discuss 'outlook addin best practices' and anything else related to this sample resource here.

Re: OnTime 2007 SDK - Outlook Task Sample

This is the start of a fantastic feature that I've been wanting for a long time.

Does this support disconnected access?  Can I create, edit, etc tasks whilst working in 'Cached Exchange Mode' and have it all synchronise up once internet access is established again?

Supporting the ability to work with the task lists while on a train when I don't have Internet access would be an ENORMOUS benefit.

    Thanks.

Re: OnTime 2007 SDK - Outlook Task Sample

Justin, the Outlook Task Integration Sample for the OnTime SDK is just that -- An OnTime SDK Sample.  This does not mean that Axosoft has official or unofficial intentions to integrate the OnTime Suite into the Microsoft Office Suite.  This sample show cases some of the finer functionalities that a developer can use the OnTime SDK for.  In previous releases of the OnTime SDK we show cased creating simple web-based applications that allowed for OnTIme data to be displayed on a web-site, or how to use the OnTime SDK to Import/Export data from an outside source.  The set of samples I wrote show cases more functional, every day use of the SDK as a tool for integrating all of your day to day applications with OnTime.

Please refer to the OnTime 2007 SDK Outlook Task Sample blog post for more details.

Re: OnTime 2007 SDK - Outlook Task Sample

Hi David, thanks for the reply and I appreciate everything you have said about this being a sample, unofficial, etc, etc.

However, I'm still interested to see whether the implementation of your sample supports disconnected access?

This is an intrinsic feature of Outlook and I'm wondering whether this means that your implementation automatically can operate in a disconnected environment or whether the task integration sample requires you to be connected to the OnTime repository at all times?

If your sample doesn't, I'd be interested to see if you came across what was required to support this feature during your investigation and development.

    I ask these questions as:

    1. Someone who can see the business benefit of supporting this feature.
    2. A developer who is interested in the idea of disconnected access to OnTime using Outlook or any other application.

    Hope this makes sense?

    Thanks.

Re: OnTime 2007 SDK - Outlook Task Sample

    Justin,

The sample has not been tested in a 'disconnected' environment, however, the sample retrieves items from OnTime and then places them in the Outlook Tasks Folder -- this would allow for synchronization with a PDA, as well as accessing the items 'offline' from Outlook on a laptop, etc.

I did not write any code to take into account 'disconnected access', though I'm with you in believing this is a generic functionality of Outlook and that I would have had to write code to not support it (quite the opposite).

As for allowing disconnected access to OnTime data, with the OnTime SDK you could write custom Mobile apps that store data internally or utilize existing applications such as Outlook or Excel -- the Outlook solution uses Tasks as an example, but Defects, Features and Incidents can also be brought into Outlook as Items and placed in special folders -- using Custom Forms in Outlook, almost anything is possible.

The custom form functionality in Outlook, and the form region functionality in Outlook 2007 specifically bring a large range of functional features to the Outlook application that allow for a variety of integration possibilities.

With the right time and design, you could use Outlook as your OnTime client -- through the SDK (however, management of certain aspects would still require an official OnTime Client such as OnTime Windows or Web).

Just a side note, as I was discussing this with a co-worker the question of "What if I create a Task while on the train, will it show up in OnTime when I synchronize".  The immediate answer to this is, "No", but the actual answer is "Yes".  The sample provided is not exactly 'fully functional out of the box' and requires some work -- it is more or less a template for building your own Outlook integration with OnTime.  As such, if you add in the ability to 'synchronize' native Outlook Tasks with OnTime Tasks and vice-versa, the answer becomes "Yes".

Re: OnTime 2007 SDK - Outlook Task Sample
Would this code need to change in any significant way with OnTime 2008?  When I try to call GetAllPublicTasks it tells me the GUID needs to be 32 digits and 4 dashes.

Re: OnTime 2007 SDK - Outlook Task Sample
Please disregard my earlier post.  The root cause appears to be that I am a moron.  I had not finished the configuration of web.config on the sdk server.  All is well.

Re: OnTime 2007 SDK - Outlook Task Sample

For our support team, synchronisation between Outlook Journal items and Ontime work log items would be excellent.
Do think this could be achievable?

    Alex

    Hello Trichromic,

I've never heard of other customers doing that before, but I believe with our SDK that should be possible for you to develop.

    Thank you,
