Howto: Best practice to group defects / features for next release?

Wat is the best way to group defects/features that should be fixed / implemented for a next release of a software?

We assign features/defects to different programmers. How can I make sure that our programmers concentrate on defects/features that should be solved/implemented first because of a planned release?

Is it possible to create a *group* that holds the defects / features for the next release? It's hardly impossible to continously put issues on hold/assigned or to change the priority to manage this.

     Thanks for the feedback.

In OnTime, we use the Priority and Severity fields to determine which defect needs to be worked on first for the next release.  Since we in support are not part of the development team, we mainly stick to the Severity field and let the project managers determine type of priority to assign for each item. This process helps us submit the necessary defects and let the development team determine how to prioritize their workload before they even start working on the defects. With this process in place, I can create a custom filter to only look at the values that I want such as Priority and Severity of each item. At the same time I can also apply a “Group By” setting in the application that will properly group each individual item based on a desired field such as priority or severity of the defect.

    Hope this helps.

    Thank you

    Hello Dragan,

thank you for your feedback. That's exactly the way we do it at this moment. It's a lot of effort to keep the priorities right because they change after each (intermediate) release.

It would be much easier if a project manager could create a *task* (grouping object) that is assigned to multiple developers (or a devteam). This *task* in term hold all the defects / features that need to be resolved/implemented for an upcoming release.

    Regards,

    Hi Patrick,

I have requested similar sort of thing some time ago and it is added to Requested Feature #2100 and seems like planned for release 7.1! -See below (I could not figure out how to copy URL):

Short Description: Add a workload view of all items types to be worked on
Description: Edited by Arash Amini on Monday, April 16, 2007 at 9:46 AM
View All defects, features, tasks per user (s) is already requested by many Ontime clients. I would welcome that and extend it to have Schedule/Workload View. That is have a screen where we can plan by weekly or with calendar (similar to MS Project) that drag and drop certain items and order in which they will be worked on. So that it can be seen what is planned to be done in the next 2 weeks. How much workload (based on estimated hours) for each Assigned Person there is etc. etc. Group by Assigned would be good to display what each person will be doing.

This is used in Agile Programming for iterations planning. Here is one product that does that (I still prefer Ontime for many other reasons) but some ideas can be looked at: http://www.versionone.net/product_planning.asp

    We currently use this method:

John Taylor – Week 2 March

    Defects: 443, 433, 346, 361, 372, 373

Target Rel: V7.1 Workflow Step: New Feature
    Completion Date:
