    Email Service - gmail, inbox.com don't work

I'm trying to set up a free POP3 account somewhere (anywhere) and get OnTime 7.1 to work with it.  I've tried GMail and inbox.com, and can't get either to work.  I can download messages fine into Outlook Express from the same server where the Email Services are running, but GMail simply won't connect (requires SSL I think and isn't an option that I can find in OnTime), and inbox.com logs the following when I click the "Check Now" button from the Email Accounts screen:

8/30/2007 3:24:32 PM: Creating Blacklist checker...
    8/30/2007 3:24:32 PM: Checking server my.inbox.com
    8/30/2007 3:24:32 PM: Connecting...
8/30/2007 3:24:32 PM: Retrieving list of messages...
    8/30/2007 3:24:32 PM: There are 1 messages...
8/30/2007 3:24:32 PM: Deleting messages from server...
    8/30/2007 3:24:33 PM: Disconnecting...
    8/30/2007 3:24:33 PM: Disconnected.
8/30/2007 3:24:33 PM: Error - Missing a positive response (+OK) from the POP3 server. The following response was recieved: '-ERR error during operation'. If you have not enabled logging, more information may be obtained by setting POP3.LogPath and/or using POP3.LogInMemory.
    8/30/2007 3:24:33 PM: Finished checking server my.inbox.com...

Any ideas why inbox.com isn't working?  Suggestions on another free POP3 provider?

Re: Email Service - gmail, inbox.com don't work

    Hello Todd,

Sorry, I have no specific information about why inbox.com won't work.

We're aware that gmail accounts don't currently work with OnTime, although we still haven't been able to determine why. I've tried myself many times to get gmail to work, and it just seems like they have some kind of restriction on their side that won't work with OnTime. So far, they've been one of the only POP3 servers we've experienced this problem with. I'll add inbox.com to the list of POP3 mail servers we need to investigate.

I believe that most other free mail accounts, Yahoo, Hotmail, etc. should all work. Let me know if you have any problems using those, or any other you might choose, and we'll explore that as well.

    Thank you,

    Hello Todd,

I'm not sure about inbox.com either, I'll look into that.

The reason GMail doesn't currently work with OnTime is that it requires SSL to connect to the POP3 gmail server. As of 7.1.2, that functionality is not in OnTime, however it will be included our next release.

    Thanks!

Great!  It's nice to have the option of setting up these accounts when they are short-lived, so I appreciate you looking into it.  I'll try getting a Yahoo account up in the meantime.

Re: Email Service - gmail, inbox.com don't work

    Hi Todd,

I just signed up for an inbox.com account to test with. They do say that their POP3 access is in beta right now, but I was able to get OnTIme to import emails from my test account without any issues. It could just be problems on their end.

    Thanks!

OK, I installed the 7.1.2 version of the email services, and inbox.com is now working.  Yes  Good news for me!  Thought I'd let you know.

So did the enhancement for sending emails over SSL get added?  I am in version 8.0.2 and i dont see the option.  This is very easy to implement and I am surprised it is still not there (unless I am wrong).

SSL for SMTP is not in the current version, but it will be available in the next release, 8.1.  What the other posts are referring to is SSL for the POP3 reader, which was introduced in 7.1.2.

We don't have an exact release date yet, but it will be by end of Q2.  We will probably release a beta of 8.1 in the next couple of weeks.
